6 Effective Ways Of Dealing With Dehydration At Home

Summer is still here and we’re all sweating it out under the fierce sun. The more you sweat, your body loses more water and salt. If these are not replenished in time, it can lead to dehydration. I’m sure you‘ve all heard the sentence ‘drink more water’ often enough. There is a reason for it. Not drinking enough water to keep the water content in your body up to par can affect your energy levels, digestion, and your skin.

What Is Dehydration?

We lose water every day in the form or urine, stool, sweat; but when the water levels in the body drop below a certain point, the body goes into preservation mode and starts restricting outflow of fluids. Dehydration is a condition when your body loses more water or fluids than it is taking in. This imbalance throws your internal system out of whack and it can become fatal if not attended to immediately.

Causes of Dehydration

  • Not drinking enough fluids/water
  • Sweating
  • High fever
  • Diarrhoea
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Vomiting
  • Diabetes
  • Burns

Symptoms of Dehydration

  • Dry mouth
  • Increase in thirst
  • Low energy levels
  • Loss of appetite
  • Disorientation
  • Decrease in urine output
  • Dry skin
  • Inability to cry
  • No wet diapers for three hours – this applies to babies

How Can You Treat Dehydration

Drink, Drink, Drink

You need to keep drinking water, even if it is small sips at a time. Your body needs it to start rehydrating. You should try and drink 10 glasses of water over a span of 2-4 hours.

Homemade Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS)

You need to replace the depleted electrolytes. Drinking sweet and salt nimbupani is an ideal home remedy for dehydration. Doctors typically prescribe ORS sachets, which are just as effective as nimbupani. So, in case you can’t get to a chemist, start sipping nimbupani immediately.

Water Rich Vegetables &Fruits

Suck on popsicles made of fruits like watermelon, pineapple, and strawberries, which are almost completely made up of water. It will help you cool down and give you the energy you need. Eat cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach, zucchini for the minerals and natural sugar present in them.

Wear Loose Clothing

In the summer you should avoid wearing tight clothing. Wear loose clothes that allow for air circulation to bring down your body temperature.

Air Conditioning

You should try and stay in an air-conditioned area as this will help cool your body. If you are unable to get to an air-conditioned area, then place a wet towel on your body and stay in the shade.

No Ice Please

Avoid applying ice packs to your skin directly. This can cause the blood vessels in the skin to constrict and will decrease rather than increase heat loss.

Therefore, stay out of the sun as much as possible, carry a water bottle wherever you go and stay away from alcohol and coffee since they are diuretics.

If after all these remedies there is no change in your condition, please head to the nearest hospital or contact a doctor. Severe dehydration, if left untreated can lead to multiple organ failure and eventually, death.
